a cup of coffee and a slice of time
Adrian belew and Michael Clay
A Cup of Coffee and a Slice of Time is a unique collaboration between guitar legend Adrian Belew (David Bowie, Talking Heads, King Crimson, Frank Zappa) and pianist, modern classical composer Michael Clay. Born out of a conversation at a restaurant one night in Nashville, Adrian remarked to his dinner guests how much he admired classical interpretations of songs from rock, alternative, folk and other popular genres. To which Michael replied that he'd like to try that. Over the next few months many songs from Adrian's remarkable solo career as well as songs by King Crimson were chosen for the pianistic treatment. The results are unique and engaging; a blend of Adrian's unique song writing and instrumental genius and Michael's personal pianist sensibilities. Additionally, in the spirit of modern classical music, Adrian composed a musique concrete piece for his inimitable electric guitar technique. The album ends with an ostinato meditation on a railway station with the two improvising over a repeating motive and recorded crowd sounds. A Cup of Coffee and a Slice of Time is a truly unique album of modern music.
